A groundbreaking installation is transforming how consumers experience perfume, using artificial intelligence to craft custom scents in minutes.
Algorithmic Perfumery, the world’s first AI-guided scent creation platform, has emerged as a roving installation across global locations from Dubai’s Museum of the Future to London’s Oxford Street. Created by artist-technologist Frederik Duerinck and scent designer Anahita Mekanik, the project challenges a fundamental question: why should 800 people decide how 8 billion humans smell?
The machine operates through a sophisticated questionnaire probing everything from personality traits to cultural background and daydreams. Three algorithms analyze responses—one examining psychological patterns, another tracking implicit behaviors like reaction time, and a third synthesizing the data into three unique fragrance formulas. Using 46-54 “scent building blocks” composed of natural and synthetic molecules, the system can generate over 500 billion distinct fragrances.
The experience takes just over a minute to produce three 5ml custom samples, with larger sizes available for reorder. Born in 2017 as an art installation examining human-machine collaboration, Algorithmic Perfumery has since traveled to design festivals worldwide, democratizing fragrance creation traditionally reserved for expert perfumers.
As AI continues reshaping creative industries, this technology represents more than convenience—it’s a philosophical shift toward empowering individual expression in a market long dominated by mass production. From London’s The Fragrance Shop flagship to Dubai’s Museum of the Future, the installation signals a future where personalized scent creation is accessible to everyone.
