India’s Push for Fair AI: Ensuring All People Are Treated Equally

India’s government has given an important instruction to all companies developing artificial intelligence models that receive government funding. They want these AI systems to be fair and unbiased, especially when dealing with sensitive topics like caste, gender, and regional differences that matter in Indian society.

Why This Matters

The problem is real. Studies have shown that popular AI tools like ChatGPT often contain caste bias and stereotypes about Indian people. Since millions of Indians use these AI tools every day, the bias can affect important decisions like job hiring, college admissions, and access to government services. This is why the government decided to step in.

What the Government is Asking

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has told all AI developers to test their models carefully before releasing them. These tests check how the AI behaves when asked tricky questions about sensitive topics. They want to ensure that AI systems don’t favor one group of people over another based on caste, gender, region, or language.

India’s Own AI Models

India is building its own AI models instead of relying only on foreign ones. Several Indian companies like BharatGen, Sarvam AI, and Tech Mahindra are creating AI systems that understand India better. By making sure these models treat everyone fairly from the start, India is creating AI that works for all Indians.

Part of a Bigger Plan

This move is part of India’s new AI Governance Guidelines released by the government. One key principle is “Fairness and Equity”—making sure AI helps everyone, not just some groups. India also wants to share these fairness tools with other countries through something called “AI Commons.”

The Goal

The simple goal is this: India wants AI systems that are fair, respectful of India’s diversity, and helpful to all Indians, regardless of their background or identity.
